HISTORY OF FOOTBALL: NFL FOOTBALL STYLE The first NFL football champion was the Akron Pros in 1920,
when the league was called the American Professional Football
Association (APFA) and the title went to the team with the best
regular season record. The APFA changed its name to the National
Football League in 1922.
The first NFL football playoff game with the championship
at stake came in 1932, when the Chicago Bears (6-1-6) and Portsmouth
(Ohio) Spartans (6-1-4) ended the regular season tied for first
place. The Bears won the subsequent playoff, 9-0. Due to a snowstorm
and cold weather, the game was moved from Wrigley Field to an
improvised 80-yard dirt field at Chicago Stadium, making it the
first indoor title game as well.
The NFL football Championship Game decided the league
title until the NFL merged with the AFL and the first Super Bowl
was played following the 1966 season.
Of the 14 franchises that comprised the American
Professional Football Association in 1920, only two remain—the
Arizona Cardinals (then the Chicago Cardinals) and the Chicago
Bears (originally the Decatur-IL Staleys). Green Bay joined the
APFC in 1921 and the league changed its name to the NFL in 1922.
Since then, 54 NFL clubs have come and gone, five rival leagues
have expired and two other leagues have been swallowed up.

HISTORY OF FOOTBALL: ARENA STYLE The Arena Football League debuted in June of 1987 with four
teams in Chicago, Denver, Pittsburgh and Washington D.C.
Currently there are 16 teams in the arena football league, divided
into two conferences and four divisions.
The very first arena bowl was played in 1987 with Denver defeating
hosting Pittsburgh 45-16. The Detroit Drive dominated the
arena football scene for the next several seasons competing in
the Arena Bowl Championship game every year from 1988-1993, winning
four of six appearances. In recent seasons, Orlando and
Tampa Bay have become the dominant arena football teams to emerge
from the sport.
