NBA
Draft for Year 2000:
The
new era off free agency compiled with the must win now mentality
has changed the way that teams approach, utilize, and rate the
success of the NBA basketball draft. Teams can longer depend solely
on the draft to rebuild there franchise or to put them "over
the hump" in their efforts to win NBA gold. Before this new
era of free agents, teams who had lottery picks, have fared well
in the history of basketball. However, in this years draft
there are many questions as to who will prove to be successful.
The first pick of this year's draft, Kenyon Martin, is recovering
from a severely broken ankle. Although he was the consensus player
of the year in college, his body and ability to recover will be
tested during the rigorous 82 game NBA basketball schedule. Not
only did the New Jersey Nets gamble with the rules for their Kenyon
Martin, but the historically conservative Utah Jazz may have taken
the biggest gamble of all by taking DeShawn Stevensen, a 6 foot
5 inch guard out of high school. He may be athletic, but his lack
of experience and maturity may prove to be too great of a challenge
for coach Sloan and the college basketball recruited team.
High school recruiting seems to be riskier than mature college
basketball players. In fact, Karl Malone already stated
that he was unhappy with the direction that his team has chosen
and may demand a trade. This man is the former Most Valuable Player
of the year and losing him may prove detrimental to the Jazz and
their successful history in basketball.
Despite the draft lacking franchise type players and older college
basketball players, there were several solid role players who
over time may prove to be corner stones of their respective teams.
The Houston Rockets may have found a replacement for Hakeem Olajuwon,
who plans on retiring after next season., in Jason Collier.
This seven footer, out of Georgia Tech has a sweet jump shot,
can bang underneath, and inhale rebounds. The Phoenix Suns
drafted Iakovous Tsakalidas, a seven foot plus center out of Greece.
Fans in the valley of the sun are praying he will be able use
his over sized body to contain the Laker's Shaquille O'Neal. A
feat no one has been able to do. The biggest winner in this
year's historical basketball draft may the Orlando Magic. Not
because of who they drafted, but who they didn't. The Magic
were able to trade away their draft picks and a few of their bench
players in order to make room under their salary cap. Orlando
has not been shy in their desire to obtain both of this year's
highest profile free agents; Tim Duncan and Grant Hill. Each of
these two player's will command over $9 mil per year. Orlando
spent over $1 million this past weekend on entertaining the two
superstars in attempt to lure them to the Magic, but that's the
big money of NBA basketball and how the history of basketball
is evolving.
